WHY ARE CROWNS USED?
A CROWN is a type of dental restoration, commonly made using porcelain, which fits on top of and around your existing tooth underneath. You might need a crown if your tooth is very worn down or if you have had a root canal and need to protect the structure of your tooth from damage.
A dental crown is used to replace or restore one tooth. It is a fake tooth shaped like a cap which fits on top of and around either your own existing tooth underneath, or a dental implant. They can also be used to improve the look of a tooth if there is not enough remaining enamel for a veneer.
BRIDGES are 3 or more units of crowns that are linked in a bridge together.
These treatments are an effective option to replace missing teeth or restore teeth that have been damaged or have cavities.
At Taylor Street dental we use a strong white material called “zirconia”. A strong replacement for your teeth which lets you eat normally and we can match the shape and colour of your surrounding teeth as closely as possible to give you a natural-looking result.
HOW DO CROWNS WORK?
First, your dentist takes an impression of your damaged tooth using an intraoral scanner, which is a thin hand-held device that we move carefully around your mouth to take pictures. This makes the process quick, easy and comfortable.
Next, we send your impressions to a dental laboratory where a dental technician will use them to create your crown. It will be custom designed for you so that it fits over your existing tooth and blends in with the rest of your teeth.
When your dentist receives your dental crown from the laboratory, they will prepare your existing tooth so that it can be fitted over the top.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS
- They restore the function of your natural tooth by strengthening the remaining structure.
- They are custom made to match the rest of your teeth in terms of colour, shape and size, so you get a final result that looks natural.
- They are strong and sturdy, so you can bite and chew without worrying.
