No offence, but I don’t like dentists!
“No offence Dylan, but I really DON’T like dentists.”
I hear this a lot and it breaks my dental heart – but then it is usually followed up by:
“Don’t take it personally, I’m just VERY nervous…”
Then my achey-breaky dental heart feels a little bit better!
I never take it personally anymore because I see it as an opportunity to help someone get over their fear of dentists. And it makes me VERY happy, excited even, when I achieve it.
Lets face it, the sounds of drills and those sharp scary looking dentist tools can be enough to scare anyone away. But a trip to see us doesn’t have to be terrifying.
Sometimes it can be a bad dentist experience as a child that still haunts us as adults. The smells, the sounds, the needle, the drill. But these days it’s quite different (modern dental technology means no pain).
Getting over that fear of the dentist is pretty important. Our aim, once you walk through the door, is to make sure you (or your child) feels safe and comfortable right from the start.
What can you do to overcome your fear of dentists?
Firstly, let us know!
Dentists can’t read minds so it’s really important to let us know that you are feeling anxious. That way we can talk you through the procedure and explain the dental instruments we are using so that you have a clear understanding of what to expect.
Sometimes knowledge is key and we are happy to talk you through it, step by step. We are a compassionate team and we understand fear, so we will do whatever we can to reassure you, or your child.
Make regular appointments
Don’t wait too long. Avoiding the dentist and only going when your teeth or gums are sore and swollen won’t turn the dental trip into a good one. Remember to make regular appointments for check-ups. Trust me, it will pay off in the long run.
Regular visits will also help you familarise yourself with the clinic and our staff – and you will also learn to trust us. We guarantee you will be greeted with a warm smile and a friendly face when you enter our practice and that will also help remove some of the anxiety.
Happy Gas (yes, you DO have options!)
For those clients who have a serious case of dental phobia – at Taylor Street Dental we offer dental treatment under Nitrous Oxide, otherwise known as ‘happy gas’. It can be the perfect solution if you are feeling anxious and overwhelmed.
All you need to do is lay back and relax, and think happy thoughts, while we do the work.
It is very possible to have a pleasant experience at the dentist (and not be scared of us!)
Give us a buzz on 9873 2777, or book an appointment online, and don’t be shy to ask us ANY questions. We can also provide you with more information on dental work under Nitrous Oxide (or our other sedation options).
At Taylor Street Dental, we believe in dental excellence and compassionate care – so if you know someone with an avid fear of dentists, let them know we will do whatever we can to reassure them.
